# Introduction
LGBTQ+ acceptance in society has come a long way, thanks to civil rights activism and education pushing for legal reforms and attitude changes. Many people along the spectrum are becoming comfortable enough with who they are to identify themselves publicly as shown in past and current census data.
Figure 1 demonstrates from the Office of National Statistics (ONS, 2024) that "Gay or Lesbian" identity grew 109% (487k to 1,017k). "Bisexual" identity peaked in 2023 then dipped. The category "Don't know/Refuse" while started off high in 2014, fell sharply from the peak in 2021 to 797k.

Figure 2 outlines current census estimates of sexual orientation of each region in England. This shift, whilst a promising trend in terms of civil rights progress is worryingly at parallel with an increase in hate crime across the country, particularly during 2022 which saw a total of 26,152 incidents. Available data shows that in 2012 there were a total of 4,345 hate crime incidents (Figure 3), whereas in 2025, there were a total of 21,523 reported incidents (Figure 4).

The Crown Prosecution Service defines a hate crime as:
> “Any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice, based on a person's disability or perceived disability; race or perceived race; or religion or perceived religion; or sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation or transgender identity or perceived transgender identity.”

A limitation of using this data however, is that reporting of LGBTQ+ hate crimes differs across regions in England and Wales. It is unclear whether reporting just got better as the years went on or if the spike of incidents is indeed linked to factors such as an increase in far right ideologies promoted through propaganda on social media or religious fundamentalism.
At the time of writing, there is an amendment to the [Crime and Policing Bill ](https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3938)being discussed, which if passed will make hate crimes against LGBTQ+ people an aggravated offence, meaning the offender will receive higher maximum penalties and sentencing.
# History and persecution of homosexuals in England
Whilst homosexuality is well documented and present throughout recorded history, the term wasn't referenced as such until 1868. Interestingly, the term was introduced into bible translations in 1946 ().
Like most persecution of minorities, there is a historic trend, often rooted in ignorance, religious fundamentalism or political heuristics of the time. Below is a timeline of persecution illustrating reforms leading into decriminalisation.
